about

The infamous whirlpool that lies between Jura and Scarba. Gayle has seen and heard it from a distance (from the Ardfern peninsula). In 1947 George Orwell was nearly drowned there, John knows someone who once sailed around it and Powell and Pressburger used two aerial cameras to shoot the sequence there for “I Know Where I’m Going”. Recorded on a Ferrograph reel-to-reel recorder on Farfisa pianorgan and clarinet, a combination which always brought out our melodramatic sea shanty streak (cf “Tunguska” and “Dunwich” from “Homemade Electroscope”). We think this came out on a compilation (or was supposed to) issued by Pop Is Dead fanzine.

Electroscope Glasgow, UK

Following a decade recording solo as Pefkin and Phosphene, Gayle Brogan and John Cavanagh are back playing pin matrix games for May, combining the sounds of a VCS3 synthesizer, a 1950s radio microphone and vortex of vocals.
